CyberTracker’s role in developing Mobile Data Collection solutions for Protected Areas

CyberTracker played a crucial role in the development of Mobile Data Collection solutions for protected areas.

CyberTracker was first adopted on a large scale in 2000 by the Kruger National Park in South Africa and then in 2002 by the Odzala National Park in the Republic of the Congo.

Over the years we developed the SMART Mobile data collection solution for the SMART Conservation Partnership. More recently we developed a Mobile data collection solution for EarthRanger, which enabled EarthRanger to develop their own EarthRanger Mobile solution. EarthRanger and SMART are now merging to form the SMART–EarthRanger Conservation Alliance (SERCA).

In a similar role, CyberTracker was a valuable tool for over seven years to the Coastal Guardian Watchmen Network in Canada. The first digital version of their Regional Monitoring System (RMS) was built on CyberTracker forms in specialized handheld devices, which launched in 2011. This system was adopted by the Coastal Stewardship Network (CNS) through a knowledge exchange with the Australian Indigenous Rangers programs, which already used CyberTracker for its work. Led by the nations and implemented by CSN team members they went on to redevelop their own version of the RMS .

CyberTracker plays an important role in providing communities with an easy platform to get started, empowering them to develop their own platforms that better suits their requirements.

CyberTracker will continue to support these projects in an ongoing partnership for the benefit of communities and conservation.

Meanwhile, there are more endangered species outside the large protected areas than within formally protected areas. Our new CyberTracker Online provides an easy-to-use option for nontechnical users in communities and small protected areas who cannot afford expensive technical solutions and technical expertise for conservation.
